Western Ghats

Western Ghats in India is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The mountain range spreads over 1600 kilometers in western India. It is one of the eight hottest bio-diversity hotspots in the world. The mountain range extends over Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Western Ghats is the home of wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, reserve forests, several hill stations, cities, waterfalls and lakes. The natural beauty of the mountain range is unrivalled.

The Western Ghats are divided in to several hill ranges, such as the Sahyadris, Nilgiris, Anaimalai hills and Cardamom hills. Anaimudi peak (8,842 ft.) on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border is the highest peak. Other prominent peaks include Mullayanagari (6,317 ft.) and Kudremukh (6,110 ft.) and Kalsubai (5,427 ft.).

Western Ghats is home to over 5,000 species of flowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 bird species and 179 amphibian species found nowhere else in the world. Even the endangered species like Malabar large-spotted civet, lion-tailed macaque, Asian elephants, tiger, sloth bear, leopard, wild boars, sambar, Black Panther, Great Indian Hornbill can be spotted here. There are 39 forest reserves in the mountainous range with world heritage status. 13 National parks shelter various unique animals and other species.

Nature lovers will enjoy the serene peace of Ooty, Matheran, Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani and Amboli Ghat, Lonavala, Khandala, Coonoor Coorg, Idukki, Munnar, Ponmudi, Wayanad and many others. These misty hill stations are charming and perfect for escapade.
