One of the most popular attractions of Jaisalmer, Gadsisar Lake is located on the outskirts of the city and boasts of a serene surrounding. It is believed that the place had some amount of declivity, it was chosen by Maharwal Gadsi Singh, the then Maharaja of Jaisalmer, in the year 1400 A.D for forming a water conservation tank. However, it is also said that it was initially formed by Raja Rawal Jaisal, the first ruler of Jaisalmer and was revamped by Gadsi Singhji.

If you visit the lake during the winter months (October to March), you can enjoy bird watching. As the place is close to Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, several colorful migratory birds visit the surround of the lake. Do not forget to carry your binoculars and camera!

In the vicinity of Gadsisar Lake, there are a number of beautiful temples too. This lake lies southwards of the main Jaisalmer city. The entry to the lake is from beautifully carved yellow sandstone archway- Tilon-Ki-Pol. This entry gate comprises of an idol of Lord Vishnu, which was added in 1908. The banks of the Lake are bounded by some beautifully carved royal chattris too.
