The Chadar Trek in Zanskar Valley, Ladakh is one of the most thrilling and adventurous trek in India. In the local language “chadar” means layer. This is referred to the layer of ice that freezes over the river in the peak of winters. The Chadar trek is basically a difficult walk on a frozen river called the “Zanskar River” in the cold months. During the summer the fast river is an enthusiastic tourist destination, a perfect location for river rafting expedition.

The frozen Zanskar River has served and still serves as the traditional and only way of connection between Leh and Zanskar. The locals in the harsh winter months of Ladakh use it for trade and transportation as they have done for past centuries.

In recent years the Chadar trek has started attracting adventure loving tourists from all over the world. It is one of the most challenging treks which covers the distance of approximately 105 km on foot. An average trekker completes a distance of 15–17 km each day. Your trek leads in a narrow valley filled with breathtaking views of ice-peaks and unexpected hanging icicles. You will spend the night at cave camps. Through the layer of ice you can often see the fast flow of the river. The trek is done at the peak of winters so that the layer of the ice is most stable.

The Chadar Trek is a perfect example of this inventiveness of the Ladakhis and their unconquerable spirit, in the face of such overwhelming odds. The experience of your adventure is one of the cherished memories of a lifetime.
