Pemayangtse Gompa

Overlooking the beautiful sights of Rabdenste ruins, perched at a height of 2,100 meters above sea level, the Pemayangtse Gompa is one of the Sikkim’s oldest and most important Nyingmapa gompas. The gompa, literally meaning “The Perfect Sublime Lotus”, was founded, planned and designed by Lama Lhatsun Chenpo in 1705. There is a wonderful statue of Buddha on the ground floor of the monastery while the upper floors features fierce looking, eight incarnations of Padmasambhava.

The monastery, a regularly visited site by pilgrims and tourists, is a three stories structures and is beautifully embellished with murals, paintings, statues, against the backdrop of scenic snow-capped mountains. One of the attractive highlights of the gompa is the impressive Chaam dance to celebrate Losar festival during the months of February and March.

Pemayangtse Gompahas undergone many refurbishments and conservations over the period of the time due to calamities like earthquake striking it time and again. Nevertheless, it is a great attraction and a must visit tourist place in Sikkim.
