Sikkim has a lot of amazing attractions in its vicinity and one amongst them is the Tsomgo Lake which is also known as the Changu Lake. It is a glacial water body in Sikkim and a beautiful place to visit. The lake is situated at an altitude of 12,400 ft. and approximately 38 km from Gangtok. This is a very popular attraction amongst the locals for a lot of reasons. The Sikkimese believe this lake to be a Jhakris which means it holds significance as a healing place. But more importantly, Tsomgo Lake is a serene place offering jaw-dropping beauty around.
The amusement and thrill start right from the moment you start the trek to the lake. From unwinding trails to sharp-edgy cliffs, an avid adventurer gets a lot of reasons to traverse to this beautiful lake. Once you reach here, there are multiple activities that can be enjoyed like riding a decorated yak or a colorful mule. All of this makes visiting Tsomgo Lake worth your while.
As already mentioned, Tsomgo Lake is approximately 38 km from Gangtok so you can take a shared cab or taxi to reach the trek point. It will be an hour's drive and then a quick trek up to the lake.
Visiting Tsomgo Lake is possible around the year and you will get to enjoy a completely different view of the surroundings in different months. Between December and March, the lake is surrounded by sheets of ice and you will see the black and white image of the mountains and the surroundings. The lake also gets frozen during this time.
If you were to visit here between April and May, the pleasant sights of Orchids and Rhododerus would treat your eyes. Whereas those visiting here between June and November will get the best view of the valley, mountains, and the lake.
There are a lot of other beautiful attractions around Tsomgo Lake, like the Nathang Valley and Menmecho Lake. While you plan on your visit to Sikkim, there are some other attractions where you can spend some quality time with your family and friends; this includes, Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary, Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple, Jelep La Pass, Nathula Pass, and all of this within 10 km of the Tsomgo Lake.
This amazing lake has a lot of sights around making it an ideal tourist spot. On the other hand, adventurers also get to enjoy their trip to this destination. Some of the amazing outdoor activities that can be enjoyed around Tsomgo Lake include trekking, yak riding, nature photography, and bird watching.
Tsomgo Lake comes under the Sikkim restricted areas and that's the reason why Indian citizens have to obtain the inner line permit in order to visit the lake. Moreover, for foreigners, it's a compulsion to obtain a special permit to visit the lake.
