Itinerary - Tribal Tour of North East India

Day 1 - Dibrugarh

Fly to Dibrugarh Airport and meet our representative who will transfer you to a hotel. Complete the check-in formalities and rest for a while. Enjoy the entire day at leisure. Explore the local markets, tea gardens, or stroll along the banks of the Brahmaputra River. After the sunset, come back to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 2 - Dibrugarh - Mon (114 km/4 hrs)

Arise for an early breakfast, check out, and leave for Mon. A famous district in Nagaland, Mon is known for the Konyaks tribe with tattoos on their faces and bodies. This is the largest tribe in Nagaland that has skills for wood carving and gun-making. Also, Aoling is their most colorful festival celebrated in the first week of April every year. Once reached, check in to the stay and unwind. The evening is free for leisure. Overnight stay in the Mon village.

Day 3 - Mon

Day 3 of your tribal tour in North East India is reserved for the Mon tour. You will visit the nearby Konyak Villages like Wangla, Hongphoi, and Old Mon to get insight into the lives of the tribe and their arts & crafts. Many people still choose to live their traditional lifestyle. Visit the houses of the tribe chiefs and see the decorations of skulls of wild buffaloes plus other hunted animals. The Konyak tribe was known for their hunting skills but in the 1960s, they stopped it.

Once the tour ends, come back to the stay and enjoy the evening at leisure. Later, slide under the sheets for a restful sleep.

Day 4 - Mon- Longwa - Mon (45 km/2 hrs)

After a fulfilling breakfast, get ready for an excursion to Longwa, one of the largest villages in the Mon district. It is located at the India - Myanmar border and mostly is home to the Konyak tribe. Here, visit the home of the Angh (the village chief), which lies half in India half in Myanmar. Meet the chief along with other Konyak families. Get to know their history and culture. Witness their war trophies collected in the Morungs (dormitories) and local crafts.

You can also buy tribal ornaments and metal crafts as souvenirs from Longwa Village. Walk around the farms and see their Jhum cultivation. Once the tour completes, drive back to your stay in Mon and enjoy a comfortable sleep.

Day 5 - Mon - Mokokchung (166 km/7 hrs)

Post breakfast, check out and proceed towards the next destination on your Nagaland tribal tour package, Mokokchung. Also known as the 'intellectual and cultural capital of Nagaland', Mokokchung was the first town built by the British in the Naga Hills. It houses the Ao tribe, which are known for their arts and folklore. After such a long day, check in at the accommodation and enjoy a relaxing sleep.

Day 6 - Mokokchung

After a fulfilling breakfast, get ready to explore the Ao tribe villages. First, visit Mopungchuket, which is known for its story of Jina and Etiben. They are the Ao version of Romeo and Juliet. Witness the exquisitely carved time pillar that tells the chronological history of the Ao tribe and its many legends, migrations, and battles.

Proceed towards the holy lake where the tribe used to perform rituals and sacrifices before battles. Next, explore the old churches, Dzukis (dormitories), the cultural museum, and more. Have a delightful lunch and afterward, visit Aliba Village, the villages of Chungtia and Ugma, the largest of Ao people. Later, come back to the accommodation for an overnight stay.

Day 7 - Mokokchung - Kohima (144 km/5 hrs)

Post breakfast, say goodbye to Mokokchung and leave for Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. On the way, stop at Longkhum Village and enjoy a visit to Doyang reservoir. Also, visit Wokha town and Tseminyu Village and then continue the journey to Kohima. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and retire for the day.

Day 8 - Kohima - Khonoma (19 km/1 hr)

Today, on day 8 of your North East tribal tour, enjoy a half-day sightseeing tour of Kohima. Visit the top attractions like Kohima War Memorial, which commemorates the sacrifices that Indian and British troops made during the Japanese invasion. Next, visit Reconciliation Cathedral and witness exquisite architecture, mural paintings, and enjoy the view of the town from the Aradura hilltop.

Visit The State Museum and see a rare collection of tribal artifacts. Next, we shall proceed towards Kisama Heritage Village, the famous venue of the Hornbill Festival. Post lunch, drive to Khonoma, one of the famous villages known to house the Angami tribe. They are popular for starting forest conservation and also put a ban on hunting. Check-in to the homestay on arrival and explore the local areas. Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in Khonoma.

Day 9 - Khonoma - Dzuleke - Benreu (3 hrs)

Start the day with a healthy breakfast and then, leave for Benreu. It is a village of the Zeliangrong tribe that comprises three clans called Zeme, Liangme, and Rongme. Benreu is located at an elevation of 1900 m at the base of Mt. Pauna. You can take a short hike. On arrival, explore the village and Morung at Benreu. It is considered the oldest structure in Nagaland. Taste the bitter honey of this place that is known to have medicinal properties. Once the tour ends, check in to the stay for a restful sleep.

Day 10 - Departure from Dimapur (91 km/4 hrs)

This is the last day of your tribal tour of the North East. So, after breakfast, get transferred to the Dimapur Airport and catch your flight to an onward destination with cultural experiences and unforgettable memories.
