Often denoted as the land of the best growing tea in the world, Darjeeling is home to a number of estates that has been running since the colonial times. One fine creation of these colonial times is the Happy Valley. Established back in the 19th century, Happy Valley is the 2nd oldest tea estate in Darjeeling. The property has a land expanse of 437 acres and is situated just 3 km north of the main town.

Happy Valley is known to produce some of the finest quality of tea in India, which goes by the name ‘Super Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe’. This gets further categorized into Green tea, White tea and Black tea. Tea bushes that are being put into use are believed to be 100 years old, or even older.

Opening hours for Happy Valley Tea Estate

The tea producing facility at Happy Valley Estate in Darjeeling stays open for visitors from Tuesday to Saturday between the timings of 8 am and 4 pm. There lies no entry fee for visiting the facility, however visitors need to pay some amount to the guide on the tour.

How to reach

By Air: Nearest airport to Darjeeling city is Bagdogra airport (95 km away). This airport connects few cities of India like Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati on a regular basis. From the airport, one can hire taxi to travel to the hill station.

By Rail: If you wish to travel the maximum distance to Darjeeling via Rail, then New Jalpaiguri Railway station would be your destination. New Jalpaiguri is one of the important railway stations in this part of India and it connects cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Guwahati, Bhubaneshwar and Kochi. From here, taxis and cabs are readily available.

By Road: Darjeeling is also accessible from some of the major cities of India via Road. Gangtok (100 km away) and Kalimpong (51 km away) are the most likeable destinations to start a road journey to Darjeeling. The hill station is also accessible from the city of Kolkata via road (651 km away).

When to Go?

Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal in India is traveled throughout the year. Its high altitude topography offers a pleasing weather for sightseeing and adventure sports. However, it is advised one must avoid traveling to Darjeeling in the monsoon months as the region is prone to heavy rainfall. Summer months (April to June) are highly suitable for hikes through the plantations and nature trails. One can also head to the hill station in the cold winter months(October-February).
