Performing Arts in Goa

About Goa

Goa is famous for its historic churches, temples, forts, traditional homes, colorful festivals, lush green countryside, rich flora and fauna, fabulous cuisine, and exotic beaches. The magical land of Goa is decked with popular tourist destinations like Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Tambdi Surla, the Calangute Beach, the Baga Beach , etc. The Performing Arts in Goa, as well, are a big crowd puller among the tourists from world over.

Performing Arts in Goa

A unique feature of Goa is its performing arts , and the state is renowned for it as well. Be it dance, drama or music, each of these performing arts here are characteristically Goan, exemplifying colorfully the theme of unity in diversity. In an attempt to restore, preserve and also help the performing arts in Goa to thrive, the Government of Goa set up a self-governing organization in Goa called the Kala Academy of Goa in the year 1970, which is proliferating even today.

Drama in Goa

Among the dramas, the folk dramas are extremely famous in Goa, especially Jagar and Tiatr . The state is endowed with excellent folk dramas narrating the stories of great epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata , accompanied with songs and music. Besides, relevant and contemporary issues of the society or the community are also projected by this medium. Other folk drama forms that are popular in Goa are Goulankala, Dashavatari, Rathkala, Ranmale , etc.

Jagar

This earliest form of drama in Goa has two forms performed by two different communities. One is Perani Jagar , performed exclusively by the Hindu Perani community. The theme deals with philosophical questions like the origin of the universe in the background of mythology. The other form is Gawda Jagar , enacted by the Christian Gawda community, who derive the theme from the contemporary village life.

Tiatr

Not exactly a drama or a musical drama, Tiatr consists of 6/7 acts, each of roughly 15 minutes' duration, called Podd'dde , interspersed by 2/3 solo, duet, trio, quarter or group songs. These songs, very popular among the masses, are based on social, political or religious themes though they are not related to the play. In the pre-liberation days, family quarrels, with heavy doses of Portuguese language and influence formed the story of Tiatr. You can also witness Khell Tiatr , a derivative of Tiatr, performed in villages during the Carnival , Intruz and Easter in the open ground. Unlike Tiatr, its songs are relevant to the main play.
